The Practice

SafeCode Consulting is a professional services practice focused on safety-critical software for regulated industries, including aerospace, medical devices, industrial safety, and defense. Founded in 2007, SafeCode supports programs where software failure is unacceptable, and certification demands disciplined engineering, verification, and traceable evidence.

SafeCode works in the mode the engagement requires, including staff augmentation, defined-deliverable projects, and advisory support. Engagements are led by a senior consultant and scaled carefully to the needs of the program, with specialized support brought in when appropriate.

The Principal

SafeCode Consulting was founded by Max A. Hinkley, who serves as principal consultant. Max helps organizations solve difficult software engineering, verification, and certification problems across safety-critical and regulated systems.

His experience spans DO-178C Level A navigation systems, IEC 62304 Class C medical devices, IEC 61508 functional safety systems, and Department of Defense programs with comparable rigor. He has developed software for organizations including Honeywell Aerospace, Hughes Network Systems, Medtronic, Ford Motor Company, and Emerson-Rosemount Automation.

Max holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in computer science and software, professional certifications in computing and electronics, and is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
