The Practice

Some software cannot fail. That is the standard SafeCode Consulting works to, building and verifying safety-critical software for aerospace, medical device, industrial safety, and defense programs since 2007. Certification in these industries does not accept good intentions; it requires disciplined engineering, rigorous verification, and evidence that holds up under scrutiny. That is the work we do.

We engage the way a program actually needs us to, whether that means embedding as staff augmentation, delivering a defined scope of work, or advising leadership on technical direction. Every engagement is led by a senior consultant, not handed off to junior staff, and scoped to match the complexity of the problem rather than a one-size-fits-all package.

For examples of this work in practice, see how some of these engagements have played out.

The Principal

Max A. Hinkley founded SafeCode Consulting and oversees every engagement personally as principal consultant. His work has crossed some of the highest-consequence software domains in industry: DO-178C Level A navigation systems, IEC 62304 Class C medical devices, IEC 61508 functional safety systems, and Department of Defense programs held to comparable standards.

Before founding SafeCode, Max developed software for Honeywell Aerospace, Hughes Network Systems, Medtronic, Ford Motor Company, and Emerson-Rosemount Automation, and others; organizations where the cost of a defect is measured in more than dollars. He holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in computer science and software, professional certifications in computing and electronics, and served in the U.S. Air Force.

Who This Is For

SafeCode Consulting is built for engineering leaders who need a second, senior-level perspective on a software program where certification, verification, or architecture decisions carry real risk, and who would rather bring in someone who has done this before than learn it under deadline pressure.

See how a typical engagement unfolds.

We "Do it for the Client"! Sometimes the most valuable thing a consultant offers isn't the work they do, but the work they choose not to do, recommending an existing solution over a custom build when it truly serves the client better. Read the full story.
